Coronavirus: how to get out of health anxiety by challenging fears

There’a a lot of health anxiety around about this new Coronavirus (COVID-19). The media coverage seems more viral than the virus itself, with almost hourly updates!

This is great for media outlet’s advertising income, but not so great for all of us with human brains.

The media is well-trained to use fear to get attention, which it does oh so effectively.

Unfortunately, our midbrains will take the highly frequent coverage of this to mean that there is immanent danger all around us, and this can generate intense anxiety.

We call it anxiety when we’re releasing more adrenaline than the situation calls for, and the thought loops, physical sensations or behaviour get in the way of us living our lives.

In the case of this Coronavirus, we don’t actually want very much adrenaline.

See, there’s nothing to run away from.

Releasing a surge of adrenaline would only send blood, oxygen and glucose rushing to your muscles, along with suppressing your immune system.

You don’t need anxiety to plan, take reasonable action, or wash your hands.

These are not activities that require sprinting at your top speed.

But even if you want to, how do you get out of the worry spirals that are triggered whenever a new media report is released?...
